A trademark is what makes your brand unique - your business name, logo, tagline, or even a specific design. When you register it as a trademark through the Intellectual Property India portal at ipindia.gov.in, you get the legal right to use it exclusively. Nobody else in India can use the same or a similar name in your business category.
Think about it this way: you've spent years building your business name. What if someone in another city starts a business with the same name tomorrow? Without a trademark, you can't stop them. With a registered trademark, you own that name legally and can take legal action against anyone who copies it.
Trademark registration is valid for 10 years (per Trade Marks Act, 1999 Section 25) and can be renewed forever. Even if you're a small business or a startup, registering your trademark early is smart. It gets harder (and more expensive) to register later if someone else files before you.
If you don't register your trademark and someone else files for the same name, they become the legal owner. You could be forced to change your brand name, reprint all packaging, redo signboards, and lose the goodwill you built over years. We've seen this happen to businesses who waited too long.
Once registered, your trademark needs to be renewed every 10 years. The renewal government fee is ₹9,000 if done on time. If you miss the deadline, you pay an extra ₹4,500 as a late fee. We send reminders to all our clients before their renewal date so nobody loses protection by accident.

™ means you've applied for a trademark - you can use this as soon as you file. ® means your trademark is fully registered and approved by the government. Using ® without registration is illegal, but ™ can be used by anyone.
A registered trademark is valid for 10 years from the date of application. You can renew it for another 10 years before it expires. You can keep renewing forever - as long as you pay the renewal fee.
You can, but we usually recommend registering them separately. If you register them together and later change your logo, you lose protection on both. Separate registrations give you more flexibility. Each registration needs a separate government fee.
